Ms. Julie R. Smith is a hepatology physician assistant at the Division of Gastroenterology, and adjunct assistant professor of Physician Assistant studies at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine in Mobile, Alabama. Ms. Smith completed her physician assistant training and masters in health sciences at the University of South Alabama in 1999, followed by a hepatology Fellowship at the same instution.
Ms. Smith has a busy hepatology clinical practice in conjunction with Dr. Herrera and specializes in the evaluation, diagnosis, counseling and management of patients with liver disease, in particular hepatitis C infection. She has published articles in medical journals and book chapters pertaining to liver disease and is active in hepatology and gastroenterology clinical research at the University of South Alabama
Dr. Jorge L. Herrera is Professor of Medicine and Assistant Director, Division of Gastroenterology at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine in Mobile, Alabama. Dr. Herrera received his M.D. from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1979. He completed an Internal Medicine residency at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Denver, Colorado, and a fellowship in Gastroenterology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. in 1986.
Dr. Herrera has an active hepatology practice and is a clinical investigator in the area of hepatitis C diagnosis and therapy. He has published articles and book chapters on the management of liver disease, including hepatitis C infection.
